• To see the heritage listed Newport Workshops continue to be used for heritage rail purposes and a heritage rail precinct established.
  • Include a world class rail museum in the heritage rail precinct that would operate in conjunction with Victoria’s operating heritage railways, heritage groups and appropriate commercial businesses in the precinct.  This would create one of Australia’s major tourist attractions
  • Investigate the possibility of listing Newport as a World Heritage Site.
  • Calling the Newport Rail Heritage Centre “Railworks” would be a fitting tribute to the late Joan Kirner (first woman to be a state Premier) who recommended “that the Newport Workshops be made into a Heritage Rail Precinct called Railworks, where operating heritage railway operators and a railway museum could be established”.
  • The precinct should be controlled by an independent board who understand railways and the historical significance of the exhibits.
  • To make the precinct and its occupants self-supporting financially.
