West Block – roads 4, 5, & 6.
With all the machinery, pounding of sledgehammers, and operation of cranes, the noise in West Block must have been substantial. As well as the overhead cranes rumbling up and down, there were dozens of wall-mounted cranes with block and tackle assisting with the heavy lifting.
It was still decades ahead before the dangers of consistent loud noise was known. But management was still aware of the communication needs of employees. So a worker’s telephone was provided right in the middle of all that noise. The shiny shoes and clean clothes make me think the guy in the photo may have been posed for the photographer. The phone box looks spiffy clean also. Photo PROV.
The background of this photo makes me think west block, but there may have been phones for employees in other parts of the workshops as well. Do any of you former Newport workers remember any?
