24th February 2023

When we look at the Newport Railway Workshops we tend to think about the construction and maintenance of locomotives and carriages in the workshop buildings. However, the West Block yards were also a hive of activity with the storage and fabrication of sections of locomotives. It was also used to construct turntables and other infrastructure like bridge sections. Many out-of-service locomotives were also stored in the yards, before being stripped for parts and metal.
