East Block Southern extension
In the EB southern extension, most of the machinery has been removed and there is little evidence of past work practices. However, there are some examples still in situ. Here are some photos of the machinery in the extension that give some idea of the production in the past.
Last week I mentioned one-off examples of VR rolling stock which are suffering from being in the east yard rather than being inside out of the weather. These were on the list to be saved and allocated to the museum, but are now not allocated at all because the museum has no more space.
Some of these wagons may eventually find a home on regional heritage railways. Some of the more unusual ones which should be part of a ‘Railworks’ heritage precinct are:
OT 8 – 4 wheel rived tank oil tank wagon built 1919
OH 19 – 4 wheel overhead maintenance van built 1911
FP 7S – bogie horse van built 1928. Used to transport horses to Melb Cup
QS 2 – special 4 bogie wagon for transporting 180-ton transformers. Used to transport heavy electrical equipment to Latrobe Valley in 1950’s
QW 2 – 4 bogie heavy load well wagon
KMQ 105 – 4 wheel 20ft container flat wagon.
VFGA 2, 3, & 4 – heavy flat wagons built from former S-class’ tenders
Z 174 – 6 wheel goods van built 1886
CM 10 – Suburban parcels van built 1901(In EB unallocated)
MTH 101, 103 & 104 – modified Harris trailer carriages
*Victoria – bogie 20-seat passenger carriage built 1887
*WW 77 – bogie 52-seat passenger carriage built 1887
(* Fortunately these two are undercover in east block although still unallocated)
