East Block Southern extension
According to a 1913 memo, a large carriage shed from the c1882 Top Shop at the NE of the Newport site, was moved and incorporated somewhere into the EB southern extension. It was a similar style saw tooth design, but as yet its position in the EB southern extension has not been identified. This needs further research as it would make the whole structure of the EB extension far more significant.
In c1941 a significant long extension was added along the east side of the extension. The style of its brickwork does not match the rest of EB, but it had some timber and some brick internal walls and a concrete floor. It provided offices and significantly improved staff amenities. Probably of more historical interest is the fact that this long addition to the east wall of the EB southern extension was used for the assembly of much of the small components for the Beaufort bombers being built in east block during the war. Cockpit panels, instruments and control components, whole assemblies which could then be bolted/screwed straight into the planes.
The B&W photo is at least 30 years ago from the southeast direction, and the colour photo from the northeast end was taken in 2022.
