Apprentices and more models at Newport

Apprentice training greatly expanded by Commissioner Harold Clapp in the 1920s, has frequently used model-making to teach practical skills.

Celebration of apprenticeship week has been a big deal at Newport over many years. There were open days where parents and friends of the apprentices were invited to the training centre where they could attend training demonstrations and could talk to the instructors. There were regular short bus trips to various parts of the workshops where they could see where the apprentices did the practical experience aspect of their training.

These photos show a group of apprentices at Newport in 1905, and the group in 1965. Also, an apprentice working on H220 under construction in 1940, and some of the 1/12 scale models built by apprentices on display during apprenticeship week during ‘60s.
